KUSAMILOB
THE ORIGINAL NAME OF THE MAYAS
The term Kusamil means "*white island". It is formed *from Kus, archaic for "white", plus Ja, "water", plus Mil, "place". It is equivalent to the Nahuatl concept of Astlan, "white land", mythical origin of the anahuacas. Therefore, the Mayan name Kusamilob is equivalent to the Nahuatl Asteka'.
In a symbolic way, the mythical island that gave its name to the country was represented in Cozumel, an island to the east of Yucatan, whose name is interpreted today (not in the past) as "place of the swallows".
As for the demonym "Mayas", the Chilames affirm that they received it after the transfer of the capital to Mayapán, in the 11th century AD. Previously, when the capital was in Chichen, they were called "itsaob". Frank Diaz
